What breaks my heart is that my younger sister and younger brother were in the car with me. I feel so horrible. Honda . How to Replace the Brake Rotors on a Mazda 3Replacing the brake rotors on your Mazda 3 may require some special tools, depending on which axle rotors you want to replace. Rear disk brakes will require a special caliper-compressing tool with proper adapters that screws the piston of the caliper inward. These kits are fairly inexpensive, and will pay for themselves the first time you need to use them. Considering the labor charges at your local repair station or dealership, consider replacing the rotors yourself when needed to save yourself a lot of money. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stand Wheel chock Turkey baster Brake fluid 1/2-inch drive breaking bar 1/2-inch drive ratchet 1/2-inch drive socket set Bungee cord Hammer Caliper compression kit C-clamp Flat edged screwdriver Brake-clean spray Shop rag(s) Impact screwdriver with Phillips-head bit 1/2-inch drive adjustable torque wrench (recommended) Step by Step : 1 Park the Mazda 3 on a flat, level, paved or concrete surface. Apply the parking brake (if you're removing the rear rotors, skip this step) and release the hood latch. 2 Place a wheel chock to block movement from the axle opposite the one you're lifting. 3 Open the hood. With a turkey baster, suck out half the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. Discard the fluid appropriately. Securely replace the cap to the master cylinder . 4 Break loose the lug nuts on the left wheel first. Do not loosen them too much, and do not remove them. 5 With the floor jack, lift the left quarter panel of the axle from which you're removing the rotors. Secure the weight of the vehicle with a jack stand in a safe and secure location. 6 Remove the lug nuts and the tire. 7 Remove the caliper bolts from the caliper using a ratchet and socket. There may be support springs clipped onto the front calipers of a Mazda 3. If so, pry them off with the screwdriver. Pry the caliper off the rotor using the screwdriver, and support it to the car with the bungee cord. Do not allow the caliper to dangle from the brake hose. 8 Remove the pads from the bridge, taking note of how they are positioned in the bridge so you can replace them in the same manner. 9 Remove the caliper bridge bolts using the ratchet and socket. Step by Step : 10 Remove the rotor retaining screws located on the hub of the rotor (if present). Use the impact screwdriver with a Phillips-head bit in the reverse position and strike it with the hammer. Step by Step : 11 Remove the rotor. If the rotor is stuck to the hub due to corrosion or rust, strike its fins with the hammer to release it. Step by Step : 12 Spray the new rotor on both sides with brake-clean spray. Wipe the rotor dry with a shop rag. Step by Step : 13 Place the rotor onto the hub and line up the retaining screw holes (if present) and tighten the screws using the impact screwdriver. Tap the impact screwdriver a couple of times with the hammer to lock the screws securely. Step by Step : 14 Compress the caliper piston. For front calipers, use the C-clamp. For rear calipers, use the caliper compression kit that screws in the piston. Step by Step : 15 Remount the caliper bridge and tighten the bridge bolts very tightly. Step by Step : 16 Reinstall the brake pads into the bridge. It would not hurt to lubricate the places where the backing plate of the pads come into contact with the bridge. Step by Step : 17 Replace the caliper and caliper bolts. Tighten the caliper bolts. Replace the support spring if applicable. Step by Step : 18 Replace the tire and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts as far as you can with the wheel elevated, then re-tighten with the adjustable torque wrench when the Mazda is back onto the ground . Step by Step : 19 Repeat the procedure for the right side. 20 Pump the foot pedal in the Mazda to restore hydraulic pressure to the compressed caliper pistons. Failure to perform this step will be hazardous. 21 Check and adjust the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder. Add only new, DOT-approved brake fluid and replace the cap tightly. 22 Remove the wheel chock, release the parking brake and take the car for a test drive.
Honda . How to Remove & Replace Brake Rotors on a Lincoln Town CarLincoln Town Cars have had a history of warping rotors. There was a technical service bulletin out about applying the correct torque to the lug nuts and how to do it. Needless to say, the original rotors of the vehicles lasted the longest, but when they had to be replaced, the problems started. The higher quality the rotor, the less often you're going to have to replace them, but the more you're going to pay for them at the parts store. With some tools in the garage and a little time invested, you can perform this repair in your own driveway and save money on labor charges at the local repair shop. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stand Wheel chock 1/2-inch drive breaking bar Complete 1/2-inch drive socket set 1/2-inch drive ratchet Large straight-edged screwdriver Hammer Channel locks or pliers C-clamp Light-grade sandpaper Bungee cord Brake clean spray Shop rag(s) 1/2-inch drive adjustable torque wrench Step by Step : 1 Park the Lincoln Town Car on a flat, level paved or concrete surface. Apply the parking brake. Press the trunk release button. 2 Place a wheel chock behind one of the rear wheels. Open the trunk and turn off the air ride button, located on the left side near the trunk hinge on the sidewall. 3 Break the lug nuts loose with the breaking bar and socket on the left front tire. Just crack them loose. 4 Lift the left front quarter of the Lincoln Town Car with the floor jack, and place a jack stand under the frame just behind the left front tire. 5 Remove the lug nuts and wheel from the left front tire. 6 Remove the caliper bolts using a ratchet and socket. 7 Pry off the caliper with the straight-edged screwdriver and secure it to the coil spring with the bungee cord. 8 Remove the pads from the caliper anchor. Pry them out with the screwdriver if you need to, but note how they are placed in the anchor so you can replace them in the exact same manner when it comes time to. 9 Remove the caliper anchor bolts. You may have to break them loose with the breaking bar and socket, but switch over to the ratchet once they're broken free to speed things up. Step by Step : 10 Remove the rotor. Look on the hub facing of the rotor. There may be some retainer washers that hold the rotor secure to the hub; if so, you'll need to pry them forward with the screwdriver and pull them off with channel locks or pliers. The only purpose of these retainer washers is to hold the rotor secure to the hub while reinstalling the caliper anchor and caliper. Do not worry if you ruin these or if they're not even on the rotor. You don't really need them. If the rotor does not move after you've removed the retaining washers, you may need to shock it from the hub. Do so by striking the rotor fin with a hammer with force to break it free from the rust to the hub. You may have to hit it several times; try hitting from behind more than in front, but be careful not to inflict damage to the fender or injure yourself. Step by Step : 11 Sand down the facing and edges of the hub with a light-grade sandpaper. Take some time and clean the hub from rust and corrosion as well as you can. Step by Step : 12 Spray the new rotor with brake clean spray very thoroughly. New rotors have an oil-based coating on them to prevent them from rusting due to condensation in the air. This oil coating must be cleaned off or it will create braking problems in the future. Be liberal with the brake clean on both sides of the rotor, and wipe it dry with a shop rag. Step by Step : 13 Replace the caliper anchor and pads. Tighten the caliper anchor bolts tightly with the ratchet and switch to the breaking bar to get another half turn out of them. Step by Step : 14 Squeeze the piston of the caliper in with the C-clamp all the way. Replace it over the anchor, pads and rotor. Replace and tighten the caliper bolts. Step by Step : 15 Replace the tire and lug nuts. Tighten the lug nuts as tight as you can get them with the ratchet and socket, then lower the Town Car and use the adjustable torque wrench set at 100 foot-pounds, but tighten the lug nuts in an alternate pattern. In other words, tighten each lug nut in the opposite position from the one tightened first until all the lug nuts are tightened to 100 foot-pounds. Step by Step : 16 Repeat the process for the right side. Step by Step : 17 Pump the food pedal when you're done to restore hydraulic pressure to the caliper pistons. Failure to perform this task can result in hazardous and dangerous results. Four or five pumps or until the brake pedal feels normal should suffice. Release the hood latch and trunk latch again if you closed it before. Check and adjust the brake fluid level in the master cylinder, and turn the air ride button back to the on position in the trunk. Remove the wheel chock. Step by Step : 18 Release the parking brake and test-drive. The fuel injection pump's brain is the governor (refer to Figure 7-5), which has a very important job: It controls the exact amount of fuel that's sent from each mini-pump to the nozzles and makes sure that the engine doesn't go so fast that it damages itself with excessive heat and pressure. Some governors are built right into the injection pump; others work off the crankshaft or the pump's timing gear; still others measure the speed of the air coming into the engine. All governors are affected by the pressure of your foot on the accelerator, the temperature in the cylinders, the altitude, the speed of the vehicle, and the load that the vehicle is carrying. At this point, the action moves to the cylinders, where the fuel, air, and "fire" meet. While the preceding steps have been taking place to get the fuel where it needs to go, another process has been running simultaneously to get the air where it needs to be for the final, fiery "power play." 5. 348

However, turbochargers have been developed that ram greater volumes of air into the cylinders and may provide greater power and fuel economy under optimum conditions. A turbocharger can increase the power on a diesel vehicle by 50 percent while lowering its fuel consumption by 20 to 25 percent! (See "Turbocharging" in Chapter 6 for details.) 6. As you've read, turning the key started the glow plugs warming up the air in the cylinders. On many engines, the glow plugs are located right in the combustion chambers of the cylinders. On others, they have been placed in little precombustion chambers (refer to Figure 7-2), which the glow plugs can heat more quickly and easily. 7. From here, combustion spreads from the smaller amount of fuel that's placed under pressure in the precombustion chamber to the fuel and air in the combustion chamber itself. The diesel four-stroke pouter cycle Although some diesel engines operate with two-stroke power cycles, chances are that the vehicles you'll encounter use a four-stroke power cycle, which is comparable to the power cycle of a gasoline engine (see Chapter 6). The following explains how the diesel's four-stroke power cycle works: I f Stroke 1 — Intake stroke (see Figure 7-7): The piston descends, the intake valve opens, and air is drawn into the cylinder. . As the pressure increases, the air heats up to the flash point (the point at which it causes the fuel to undergo sponta neous combustion). Just before that point is reached, fuel injectors spray fuel into the combustion chambers at the precise instant when ignition is to take place. Figure 7-8: Compression stroke. Stroke 3 — Power stroke (see Figure 7-9): With intake and exhaust valves closed, the fuel ignites, and combustion forces the piston down. This driving power is transmitted through the transmission and the rest of the drive train to the wheels, which causes the vehicle to move. Honda . Diesel fuel (sometimes called diesel oil) comes in two grades: Diesel #1 and Diesel #2 (or 1-D and 2-D). Just as gasoline is rated by its octane, diesel fuel is rated by its cetane, which indicates how easy it is to ignite and how fast it will burn. (The higher the cetane number, the more volatile the fuel.) Most diesel vehicles use fuel with a rating of 40 to 55. Most diesel automakers specify Diesel #2 for normal driving conditions. Truckers use Diesel #2 to carry heavy loads for long distances at sustained speeds because it's less volatile than #1 and provides greater fuel economy. Honda .
